Garden Gate Restoration in Ealing

Restoring a Rotten Wooden Garden Gate in Ealing

We recently completed a garden gate repair and restoration in Ealing, transforming a weather-damaged wooden gate back into a strong and attractive feature.

Wooden gates are constantly exposed to the elements. Over time, rain, moisture, and temperature changes can cause timber to weaken, rot, and lose its appearance. In this case, the gate had suffered years of exposure, leading to soft timber and visible deterioration in several areas.

Despite the condition, the gate still had a solid structure in key sections. Because of this, restoration was the best option. This approach is often more cost-effective than replacement and helps retain the original character of the gate.

Initial Inspection and Assessment

Every successful garden gate repair starts with a detailed inspection. This allows us to understand the extent of the damage and decide on the most effective repair method.

During this project in Ealing, we carefully checked the entire gate for:

  • Rot and soft timber

  • Structural movement

  • Weak joints and fixings

  • General wear and tear

The lower sections of the gate were the most affected. This is common, as these areas are more exposed to rainwater and damp conditions. However, the main frame remained solid, making the gate a good candidate for restoration.

Removing Damaged Timber

Once the assessment was complete, we moved on to removing all rotten and weakened wood. This is a critical step in any repair process.

Leaving decayed timber in place can lead to further problems over time. To ensure a long-lasting result, all affected areas were carefully cut out and cleaned back to solid wood.

This creates a strong base for rebuilding and ensures that the repair will hold properly.

Strengthening the Existing Structure

After removing the damaged sections, we treated the remaining timber with a specialist wood hardener. This product soaks into the wood fibres and strengthens them from within.

This step is especially important when working with older timber, as it helps stabilise the structure and prepares it for further repair work.

By reinforcing the existing frame, we ensure the gate remains strong and reliable once the restoration is complete.

Rebuilding and Repairing the Gate

With the structure stabilised, we rebuilt the missing and damaged sections using a high-quality exterior-grade filler designed specifically for timber repairs.

Each section was carefully shaped and formed to match the original design of the gate. Attention to detail is important here, as it ensures the repair blends seamlessly with the existing wood.

This process restores both the strength and the appearance of the gate, making it look natural rather than patched.

Sanding and Surface Preparation

Preparation is key to achieving a professional finish. Once the repairs had fully cured, the entire gate was sanded down.

This serves several purposes:

  • Smooths out the surface

  • Blends new and old materials together

  • Removes any imperfections

  • Prepares the timber for painting

We also carried out additional strengthening work on the frame to ensure the gate was stable and operated correctly.

Protective Finishing with Cuprinol Barleywood

To complete the project, we applied Cuprinol Barleywood exterior wood paint.

This high-quality finish provides:

  • Protection against rain and moisture

  • Resistance to sunlight and UV damage

  • A durable coating against general wear

  • An attractive, natural-looking colour

Applying the right finish is essential for prolonging the life of the gate and maintaining its appearance over time.
